When Vincent van Gogh is mentioned, the first work that comes to mind is "Starry Night." The painting stirs deep emotions, provoking thought and emotion. It's likely to evoke different emotions in each observer.

While some are enchanted by the light of the moon and stars that illuminate the town, others remember the death evoked by the cypress tree.

Van Gogh, who struggled with psychological illnesses throughout his life, was receiving treatment at the mental hospital in Saint-Remy due to his illness in 1998, when the painting was made.

The mental hospital, which was formerly a monastery, is located in France.

His psychological distress, particularly exacerbated by a dispute with his colleague Paul Gauguin, led to the cutting off of his ears. During his hospital stay, he began painting to ward off his mental illness. This conclusion is evident in the letters he wrote to his sister, Theo. With the support of his work, he continued to work on numerous paintings in his hospital studio. Although his hospital room overlooked a green landscape, it did not contain the structures depicted in the painting, as "Starry Night" differed from his other landscape paintings in that it was created through the power of imagination.

First, we should discuss the characteristics of the painting "Starry Night." It was created in 1998. The painting, created with oil on canvas, measures 73.7 x 92.1 cm. It is currently on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The painting's focal point is the sky, illuminated by the intense light emitted by the stars and moon at night. The moon and stars are the main sources of light for the composition. A large cypress tree is visible in the foreground. Cypress trees are often associated with death.

We can give the cypress trees in cemeteries as an example of this.

In the lower part of the painting, we see a town and its small houses. In the center of the town, a church with a pointed tower reaching toward the sky is depicted. In the outer part, the surrounding mountains are visible. Among the painting's circular brushstrokes, we can see the canvas itself in small dimensions. The canvas clearly demonstrates continuity and balance. The abundant use of contrasting colors significantly enhances the painting.

A famous painting reflects great power through light and brightness in the upper section. The lower section depicts a town and its surrounding life. In the middle, a cypress tree reaching both to the ground and the sky evokes death, while the surrounding mountains surround it. A symbol of balance, it seems to evoke a complete sense of life.
